Car rental in Rome
Pointless in the historic centre, useful for the Castelli Romani and the coast. Here's how to think about it.
Restricted zones and traffic: what to know before driving in Rome
Central Rome has an extensive restricted traffic zone and heavy traffic, with scarce and expensive parking. If your goal is to see Piazza del Popolo, skip the car: the centre is well served by metro and bus. If your goal is exploring the Castelli Romani or the Lazio coast independently, renting makes sense — pick up the car at a car park outside the centre and don't attempt to drive it into the restricted zone.
When it makes sense
For the Castelli Romani, the Lazio coast and the villages of the province — these destinations are best explored by car, with your own schedule and free stops at wineries.
When it doesn't
For staying in Rome: the historic centre is well connected by metro and bus, and the restricted zone makes driving inconvenient and costly. A car here is only a parking problem.
